My parents were crowned “King and Queen” at their Temple’s Purim Gala. Their friends told me months before, “Marcy …..you should come….this is going to be VERY big.” So of course we came and hooped it up!
My Father is 86 and Mom is 83. They not only do not look it on the outside, but their spirit and zest for living continue to inspire me and those around them.
Here is what I’ve learned from both of them…..
- Aging Gracefully is really possible!
- You are in control of your life. If it gets boring or uninteresting, do something about it. My father learned to play the organ in his 60’s….and became a Mac and Graphic Design Expert in his 70’s. My mom always finds excitement in everything.
- Focus on Healing versus Hurt
- Always say “I love you” to someone you love……everyday
- Never stop joking around and don’t forget to laugh….hard and till it hurts your tummy, releases your stress and fills your soul
- Even when you don’t feel like it, “put on your face” as my father calls my mom’s daily make up session
- Notice the small and wonderful stuff
- Smile when you walk into a room
- Reach out and touch, squeeze, kiss, hold and hug…..it feels so good and makes you want to live another day to give and receive more of that yummy stuff.
- See the glass half full and fill it up to the brim as often as you can
- Cherish your friends…..they are your community
- Accept your spouse’s limitations, celebrate their strengths
- Stay in the room when times get tough…and they will sometimes.
- Never blame or hold a grudge
- Learn to say “I’m sorry,” “Let Go” and Continue ON!
- Take one day at a time and live it to the max
- In doing all of this and more……we are all sure to live a long wonderful life and live it well…….
Thank you dear beloved parents. I adore and treasure you so.
