The Stream Of Life

My sister and I like to collect heart rocks. Yesterday, on a beautiful August day in Aspen, she drove me to The Old Mining Town of Ashcroft, outside of Aspen. We walked along the path where settlers built their log cabins over 100 years ago.

Growing up in Florida, we are both water girls. We shared how we feel grounded, mesmerized and at peace when we are by water. We ended our exploration down by a creek, where the water was flowing over the rocks.

She told me how her friend looked at the stream as a metaphor of life. I was excited by this concept and so we continued the conversation, looking at the ways in which the stream mirrors the navigation of our own lives and inspires new ways to view and approach challenges we face along our “stream of life”….

Even after a dry spell, the stream keeps flowing.
When the flow gets stuck it always finds its way.
For the water may freeze but it will melt in time.
And it will go right, sometimes left, and sometimes it will rise above the “stuff” in the way….
Overcoming what seemed like a block….finding a new path…into the freedom of the flow once more….
There are rocks of all sizes, colors, and shapes…..all beautiful.
Some are smooth and some have edges….
Some edges are softened by the passing of time
What is stuck under a rock eventually gets attended to by the tides, as it loosens and continues on it’s journey
Sometimes the water goes slowly….sometimes robust….and sometimes frenetic. But one thing is for sure…. it is always is in motion and never stays the same.
From once it came to where it will go remains to be seen. And oh….the places it will go…..
and when the river leasts expects it, it finds its heart where it’s been all along….

My sister is turning 60 next month, and has been grappling with what that means to her.

Somehow watching this beautiful stream of water – rocks – sand and twigs dancing together gifted us such quiet peace and clarity…..when….for a moment…this thing called life….made perfect sense.
